3,000 Mile Motor Oil Change…Fact Or Propaganda?
Where Do You Live?
Where did the magic number “3,000″ come from that determines when we’re supposed to change our motor oil? That number has been around for at least 50 years. That number didn’t just pop out of nowhere, someone had to suggest that it was logical to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
Times have changed! Gone are the days of short commutes living near your place of business. More and more people are moving out of the hustle and bustle of the city seeking solace, in exchange for a long commute to work. A longer commute means additional miles and more oil consumption.
Traveling on dirt and gravel roadways are a thing of the past for nearly everyone. The daily commute now is relatively dust free compared to years ago. Dirt and dust are an engine’s enemy. This creates a severe operating environment for engines and engine oil. Oil changes are not needed as frequently as more and more roads are paved and the dirty driving conditions are in our rearview mirrors.
It’s funny to reminisce how pumped we got when our engines made it to 70,000 miles. This is a recent advancement but feels like it was just the 80’s when the longevity of vehicles boosted. Engine materials and manufacturing tolerances improved and when that happened it increased to capability of extending oil changes with the right motor oil.
That 3,000 mile oil change, where is it now? I don’t know because I am not seeing it in the manual for any of my vehicles. I am seeing a lot of oil bottles that have higher numbers than 3,000 on them. So who is out there, spreading the 3,000 mile oil change propaganda?
