Where Do You Live?

There are a variety of factors which a motorist should bear in mind when they’re looking at purchasing an automobile: from the amount it is going to cost to its handling and petrol use, to name but a few. Besides pricing, a great number of factors relate to the engineering facet of things and are, not surprisingly, extremely important yet there are other variables which need to be considered which includes whether you ought to buy a hatchback or a sedan.

For some people, deciding if they should purchase a hatchback or a sedan may be influenced by the type of car their mom and dad drove while they were growing up or even by the vehicle they took their driver’s license in. In other words, they choose the type of vehicle they are most accustomed to. And then there are the ‘gender spectacles’ that men and women sometimes put on. Many men prefer sedans because they view hatchbacks on the whole to be too girly looking, having said that, give them a sporty coupe that merely happens to have a hatch at the rear and they are fine with those. Women, on the other hand, tend to naturally gravitate towards hatch-backed automobiles and you will often observe women zipping around town in these kinds of cars.

Having said that, it isn’t just the cute appearance of the smaller economy hatchbacks that draws females; there’s a lot of common sense behind their choice of automobile. For a start, it’s a lot easier to manoeuvre in a hatch-backed car due to their compactness and there’s no trunk protruding at the back that possibly makes it harder to park in small spaces, for example. What is more, because hatchbacks sometimes have a lighter weight body than certain sedans and many SUVs, they have an inclination to be less heavy on fuel. Some folks may even go so far as to say that small hatch-backed cars have less drag and are more streamlined which also contributes to lesser fuel consumption.

In the past, hatchback cars were associated with the economy end of the market for the reason that had smaller motors and hardly any ‘frills’ and therefore were generally less expensive than sedans. Nowadays, however, automobile manufacturers are making hatch-backed automobiles which rival sedans with regards to luxury and power and frequently even go beyond the latter when it comes to sportiness. On the other hand, even the bottom-of-the-range hatches normally have power steering and safety bags nowadays and also extras such as a low-fuel indicator light and a warning bell that chimes to remind the driver not to leave the lights on, hence there really is no longer any reason not to buy a hatchback.

Then again, hatchback automobiles have one major edge over sedans which the latter cannot match and that’s the extra trunk space you have with a hatch because the back seats of hatchbacks are designed to be flipped forward to create a flat loading bed. What’s more, the space you get is both vertical and horizontal because it’s not truncated by the back window and trunk lid as in the case of a sedan.
