Chassis Straighteners For Auto Body Repair
Where Do You Live?
Used to repair the structural frame of a vehicle after a crash, a chassis straightening machine is a specialty auto body repair tool suitable on most cars, trucks, vans and SUVs. Using the power of hydraulics, chassis straighteners supply an auto body repair technician with a versatile means of repairing damage done to the frame of a vehicle.

Chassis straighteners are typically designed to accommodate vehicles of all sizes. Upwards of six metres long and more than two metres wide, machines with movable platforms can commonly be raised up to a metre or more for technicians of different height. They feature up to four pulling towers. These are the components to which the chassis is chained. Once the frame of the vehicle is clamped to the platform, the towers provide several tonnes of resistance when the hydraulic ram is activated.
Infinitely adjustable pull collars are mounted to the towers, and these can be moved to any position relative to the chassis. These collars are connected to run chains which do the actual pulling of the chassis back into shape. High-strength pinch weld clamps keep the frame firmly in place as the hydraulic force acts upon it. Once the frame is bolted to the platform, the clamps have been bolted to the points of the chassis that need straightening and the run chains hooked to the clamps, the straightening may commence.
Chassis straighteners are capable of making multidirectional pulls. In other words, if a vehicle’s bent chassis needs to be, for example, brought both forward and up, the right number and positioning of run chains can do this. Once the components are set, the hydraulic ram is set in motion, and the vehicle’s frame is bent back into proper shape along multiple planes.
The optimal combination of chain position and hydraulic force is necessary in order to properly straighten a vehicle’s frame. Machines with more pulling towers are more versatile and capable of complex repairs. A straightener with three or four towers is superior to a two-tower machine at making more complicated, multidirectional pulls simultaneously. Most passenger vehicle frames, however, only require a two-tower machine for straightening.
