It is never fun to break down in the middle of nowhere, especially on a cold or stormy night.  If you are having car trouble in a remote area, it could take some time before a helpful driver comes your way.

Here are 9 things that you should carry in your car or truck at all times.  Hopefully, you will not need them.  In the event you have car trouble, you will be very glad that you were prepared.

  1. A fully charged cellphone so you can call for help - or let your family or friends know that you are having trouble.
  2. Jumper cables in case your battery goes dead, or you meet someone one the road that needs a jump.
  3. A spare tire and jack normally comes with your vehicle.  Make sure that your spare tire is properly inflated.
  4. A flashlight and, if you can get your hands on one, a flare.  Obviously, you might need to look under the hood at night time.  You can use this light to alert other drivers that you’re having an emergency.
  5. Always carry at least a gallon of potable water.  In winter, you can get dehydrated, too.
  6. A warm thermal blanket and dry matches that you can use to start a campfire may be critical during bad weather.
  7. A map will always come in handy in case you get lost.  It can also help identify your location if you need to call for help.
  8. Basic tools like a wrench, screw drivers and so on may come in handy.  You might find that having a roll of duct tape on hand might come in handy!
  9. A gasoline can is a good thing to have in case you run out of fuel and need someone to deliver some gas to you.

Portable automotive emergency stations are very useful.  These units come with a jump starter, a strong light and an air compressor that you can use to inflate a flat tire.  You need to be sure to keep these units fully charged.  Most of them can be charged wtih an AC or DC plugin.  While they are very handy to have, these portable units are worthless if you break down in a remote location and discover that the battery is dead.
