Where Do You Live?

Have you ever been told that putting synthetic motor oil in your older engine will cause it to leak? The answer is yes it will… If your engine is old and not well maintained.

Over the years, an engine that is prone to overheating, and hasn’t received decent care or enough oil changes, is probably going to have accumulated a lot of sludge and varnish sediment.

If a valve cover gasket or a pan gasket are isolated from the engine oil because it is covered by a “false seal” of varnish or sludge then a quality synthetic oil could expose a dry seal by cleaning away the varnish and sludge.  A dry seal could leak when exposed.

So you have to ask yourself if you’ve changed your oil as often as recommended.  Is your engine operating as it should…is it in good repair?  Have you (or has anyone else) put more than 200,000 miles on your engine?

If you take average care of your vehicle then you are likely a good candidate to swap to synthetic oil.

A quality synthetic motor oil contains good seal swell additives to ensure a leak free engine.

This is a little more difficult to check on some vehicles but the problem comes in when they forget to tighten your oil filter or it gets over tightened.  You definitely don’t want it too loose because it might back off or the o ring might blow out and then you’ll have a huge and obvious oil leak that hopefully you’ll catch right away.  If it’s too tight, the o ring could rupture and leak and whoever changes the oil next is going to be faced with a nightmare when they try to take off the filter.
